The entire HAPM team would like to extend our gratitude to Miss Indra Balaratnam for speaking to us on nutrition basics. During the live webinar, we learnt that diet, exercise, and sleep are the three main pillars of a healthy life.
Exercise, we shirk at the thought of the word, BUT movement is the most effective way to lose weight, maintain a healthy BMI and build a strong heart. Movement also increases the amount of HDLs (good cholesterol) in our body for a strong immune system to fight against diseases. With our busy schedules, it may be difficult to carry out the recommended exercise of 30 minutes a day, but a smart way to keep moving is to set small goals in the day like achieving 10,000 steps in the office or at home.
Diet and nutrition affects virtually all aspects of our health. This is why it is important to always practice portion control. This habit instills a sense of awareness with our consumption and allows us to predict our eating patterns in a day. Portion control encourages us to be more disciplined with the food we eat, thus reducing the risk of a myriad of health conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.
While most people know that diet and exercise are two important ways to improve their health, sleep is often overlooked. The lack of a full 8 hours of rest not only increases the amount of cortisol a.k.a the stress hormone in our system, but it also increases our cravings for sweet foods. Therefore, sleep deprivation = weight gain.
