Project Overview
The Kuching-based Tropical Peat Research Laboratory (TPRL) is a research and development (R&D) for Sarawak, the first entity in the world to embark on tropical peat research.
The project costs RM40mil and is funded by the state government. The TPRL will have a gallery, auditorium, multi-purpose hall, accommodations for staff and researchers, cafeteria, prayer rooms, meeting rooms, sports and recreational facilities and laboratories.
The site of 31-ha complex located next to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) campus would initially house a three-storey researchers’ accommodation, including foreign researchers, sports and recreational facilities and multi purpose hall, the TPRL would encourage collaborative R&D between the public and private sectors, academia and international co operations.
The facility was designed to create an environment responsive to the present needs and capable of accommodating future R&D demands. Functionality of the building concept is to ensure efficient experimental work flow process and contamination control. The lab will be operational 24 hours, seven days a week. The sports and recreational facilities were added to the facility to give staff some space to un wind and promote interactive and healthy working environment as R&D work could be very stressful sometimes.
Glass partitions were used in the lab to ensure a transparent working environment and at the same time, give flexibility to accommodate changes for future expansion needs.
